Amphotericin B-related nephrotoxicity in low-risk patients BJID

INTRODUCTION: Amphotericin B (AmphoB) is the drug of choice for treatment of severe fungal illnesses; however, it is very nephrotoxic. Modified (less toxic) amphotericins are very expensive. In low-risk patients, saline loading would be enough to prevent significant loss of renal function. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with normal renal function and within the first 24 hours of treatment with AmphoB were prospectively enrolled in the study. Patients in intensive care units or who were using vasoactive drugs were excluded. Saline loads were infused before and after the AmphoB treatment. Blood and urine analyses were made at the beginning and at the end of the treatment. Serum creatinine was repeated 30 days after the end of the AmphoB treatment. RESULTS:...

Salinity is a limiting factor fot growth and development, since it affects several physiological processes in plants. This trial aimed to assess the levels of photosynthetic pigments, betacyanins, lipid peroxidation and activity of antioxidant enzymes in Alternanthera philoxeroides under salt stress. Plants originated from an in vitro culture were acclimatized and irrigated with sodium chloride (0, 200 and 400 mM) for 30 d. Comparative study of the pathogenicity of seabed isolates of Fusarium equiseti and the effect of the composition of the mineral salt medium and temperature on mycelial growth BJM

The pathogenicity of seven strains of Fusarium equiseti isolated from seabed soil was evaluated on different host plants showing pre and post emergence damage. Radial growth of 27 strains was measured on culture media previously adjusted to different osmotic potentials with either KCl or NaCl (-1.50 to - 144.54 bars) at 15º, 25º and 35º C. Significant differences and interactive effects were observed in the response of mycelia to osmotic potential and temperature.

México ha avanzado poco en el estudio, conservación, aprovechamiento sistemático y mejoramiento genético del jitomate nativo mexicano. También hace falta conocer las respuestas de este germoplasma a condiciones de algún tipo de estrés ya sea biótico o abiótico. Con tal fin en la primera parte de este estudio, el objetivo fue conocer la diversidad agronómica y morfológica del jitomate nativo mexicano, con miras a su incorporación en programas de mejoramiento genético. Biofilm formation can lead to various consequences in the food processing line such as contamination and equipment breakdowns. Since formation of biofilm can occur in various conditions; this study was carried out using L. monocytogenes ATCC 19112 and its biofilm formation ability tested under various concentrations of sodium chloride and temperatures. Cultures of L. monocytogenes ATCC 19112 were placed in 96-well microtitre plate containing concentration of sodium chloride from 1-10% (w/v) and incubated at different temperature of 4 ºC, 30 ºC and 45 ºC for up to 60 h. Excess salts in the root zone inhibit water uptake by plants, affect nutrient uptake and may result in toxicities due to individual salts in the soil solution. Excess exchangeable sodium in the soil may destroy the soil structure to a point where water penetration and root aeration become impossible. Sodium is also toxic to many plants. Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are consumed as protein source in northeastern Brazil, although little is known about common bean cultivar tolerance to salinity. A possible survival strategy for plants under saline conditions is to use some compounds that could alleviate the salt stress effect. One of these compounds is nicotinamide (vitamin B3/niacin). The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of alkaline solution marinades on the characteristics of pork subjected to post-mortem pH decrease in pig muscle. The pH of carcasses was measured in a commercial slaughterhouse (n = 526), 45 min after slaughtering (pH45) and, then, the carcasses were divided into the groups with pH45<5.7 or pH45&gt;5.7. This work aimed to evoluate physiological response of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) seeds submitted to salt stress. Seeds of cultivars 'Epace-10'; 'Canapu' and 'Pitiúba' of cowpea, were submitted to germination test in germinator at 25(0)C, in "germitest" papers imbibed in distilled water or in 0, 10, 50, 100 and 200mol m-3 NaCl solutions. Potasssium chloride as a nutrient seed primer to enhance salt‑tolerance in maize PAB

The objective of this work was to determine if KCl could be a useful nutrient primer for safe seed germination in maize crop under salt stress conditions. Seed priming was done using 50 mmol L‑1 of muriate of potash, and germination and seedling growth were evaluated after salt stress with NaCl up to 50 mmol L‑1. Another set of seeds was tested under the same salt stress conditions without priming. Under salinity stress, germination percentage, germination rate index, germination coefficient, and seedling vigor indexes were higher in primed seeds. In unprimed seeds, mean germination time increased, while the germination rate index and the fresh and dry matter mass decreased more sharply with salinity stress. The Na/K ratio was higher in unprimed seeds.

En la presente investigación se realizaron dos experimentos con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de cloruro de sodio (NaCl) y cadmio (Cd) en variables de crecimiento, fisiológicas y bioquímicas de plántulas de pimiento morrón variedad Yolo Wonder. Ambos experimentos fueron conducidos bajo condiciones de invernadero, en cultivo hidropónico en placas flotantes en contenedores de 3 L de capacidad, utilizando la solución nutritiva Steiner al 50%. En el primer experimento se trataron las plántulas de pimiento durante 30 días con diferentes concentraciones de NaCl (0, 25 y 50 mM), posteriormente se evaluaron parámetros de crecimiento, variables fisiológicas y acumulación de macro y micronutrimentos. Survival and behavior of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, submitted to antibiotics and sodium chloride treatments Ciência Rural

In order to evaluate the use of antibiotics and NaCl on the behavior and survival of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, infested by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and infected with Aeromonas hydrophila, juveniles were treated with chloramphenicol, chloramphenicol + salt, oxytetracycline, oxytetracycline + salt and water alone (control). Fish survival in the treatments with chloramphenicol + salt and oxytetracycline + salt was significantly higher than in the other treatments. The treatment with chloramphenicol presented higher survival than the treatment with oxytetracycline and both showed significantly higher survival than control.
